The best genuinely free AI visibility checkers in 2026 are HubSpot’s AEO Grader, Semrush’s AI Search Visibility Checker and Ahrefs’ AI Visibility Checker, no-signup, one-time snapshots of how ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity describe your brand. Otterly, Am I on AI, Omnia and LLMrefs add free tiers alongside their paid monitors.

Below is what each one actually gives you, where the “free” stops, and what a snapshot can and cannot tell you. We build one of the tools in this space, so we have flagged that plainly and put our own honest scan numbers at the end rather than the front. Every competitor fact here is either from each vendor’s own pages (competitor pricing as of July 16, 2026) or verified on the vendor’s site and linked.

What counts as a “free” AI visibility checker

“Free” means three different things in this category, and the difference matters more than any single score:

  • One-time graders. You type a domain, the tool runs a fixed set of prompts once, and you get a grade. No account, no tracking, a photo, not a film.
  • Free tiers of a paid monitor. A limited slice of a subscription product: one keyword, a handful of prompts, or a checker that emails you a report to pull you into a trial.
  • Freemium tool suites. Standalone utilities, an llms.txt generator, a crawlability checker, given away to earn goodwill, separate from the paid tracking.

All three are useful, and all three are marketing. A free checker exists to show you a gap and then sell you the fix, which is fine as long as you read it that way. If you want the paid landscape instead, our rundown of the best AI visibility tools prices the full field side by side.

The best free AI visibility checkers, one by one

Here is the honest version of what each free tool includes, how it works, and what waits behind the paywall. The table is the fast scan; the notes below add the detail.

Compiled from each vendor’s own pages in July 2026: competitor pricing is as of July 16, 2026 (from each tool’s pricing page, linked in the notes below), and free-tool details were verified July 16–17, 2026. Free-tool terms and engine coverage change often, check the vendor’s own page before relying on any of them. Honesty note: Cituna does not track Microsoft Copilot; the free llms.txt generator is our own tool and the full scan is a 7-day trial with a card required.

HubSpot AEO Grader

The cleanest genuine free check in the category. HubSpot’s AEO Grader runs with no account, no login and no email, you enter your brand and, in under two minutes, it reports how ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini characterize you from their training data. The result is a composite score out of 100 weighted heavily toward sentiment, with presence quality, brand recognition, share of voice and market competition making up the rest, plus a written read of what it found. The limit is in the name: it is a one-time grade, not tracking, and it stops at three engines, no Claude, Grok or Google AI Overviews. Ongoing monitoring is a separate paid HubSpot product (about $50/mo as of July 2026). As a fast, honest first look with zero friction, it is hard to beat.

Semrush AI Search Visibility Checker

Semrush’s free AI Search Visibility Checker needs no sign-up and returns an overall AI-visibility score, where and how your brand is mentioned, and how you stack up against competitors across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. It counts both direct links and unlinked brand mentions, which is a nice touch most single-shot tools miss. The deeper product, the Semrush AI Toolkit, is paid at $99/mo per domain and adds daily prompts and a site audit (as of July 16, 2026). If you want the full comparison of that paid toolkit against dedicated tools, see our Semrush AI Toolkit alternatives rundown.

Ahrefs AI Visibility Checker

Ahrefs offers a free AI Visibility Checker that previews your presence without an Ahrefs account, and it covers the widest engine set of any free tool here: AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Gemini. It is deliberately a limited preview of Brand Radar, Ahrefs’ paid AI-monitoring product, which unlocks unlimited projects and its large prompt corpus. Two honest caveats: the free preview is a snapshot, and Brand Radar’s deeper chatbot data refreshes on a slower cadence than daily, we get into that in our Ahrefs Brand Radar alternatives page. For a free, broad first read that includes Copilot, it is a strong option.

Am I on AI

Am I on AI leads with content. Its free 0-100 checker gives you a single visibility number, and “The Index”, its public leaderboards across 17+ categories, is a genuinely useful way to see who leads your space before you pay anything. The trade-off shows up the moment you go past the free check: every paid tier tracks only ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, starting at $100/mo (as of July 16, 2026), with no Claude, Gemini, Perplexity or Grok at any price. As a free scoreboard it is fun and informative; as a monitor it is narrow, which we cover in our Am I on AI alternatives page.

Otterly.ai’s free tools

Otterly has one of the better free-tool suites in the category: a visibility checker, prompt research and a GEO content audit, all free to try alongside its paid monitor (from $29/mo, 15 prompts across four engines, as of July 16, 2026). The free tools are a good way to see the shape of your prompt landscape and where your content is thin. If you like the free tools and want the fuller monitor, weigh the entry caps first, we line them up in our Otterly.ai alternatives rundown.

Omnia’s 40-prompt report

Omnia’s free front door is a 40-prompt AI-visibility scan that emails you a report, more prompts than most one-time checks, which makes it a fuller first read, in exchange for an email address. Its paid Growth plan is €79/mo and, unusually, includes a genuine 14-day trial with no card required (as of July 16, 2026). It tracks Claude and Microsoft Copilot but not Grok. For a deeper, report-style free look and a no-card paid trial, it is a friendly on-ramp; our Omnia alternatives page has the fuller picture.

LLMrefs’ free tier and tool suite

LLMrefs is the standout for genuinely free, ongoing-ish access. Its free 1-keyword tier needs no card, and its free-tool suite is one of the best around, an llms.txt generator, a crawlability checker and a Reddit finder. The paid plan is a flat $79/mo for 500 prompts across 11 engines with a weekly refresh (as of July 16, 2026). If you want to keep an eye on a single important keyword for free, or grab a few free utilities, LLMrefs earns its place; we compare it against faster-cadence tools in our LLMrefs alternatives page.

Ubersuggest (Neil Patel)

Ubersuggest is the freemium veteran here. Its free tier gives you limited SEO lookups, keyword research, a site audit, which is where its “free” genuinely lives. AI-visibility tracking (a brand-visibility score, industry rank, top prompts and competitor trends) is surfaced inside its paid, flat-priced plans rather than the free tier. If you already use Ubersuggest for SEO, the AI view is a convenient add-on; if you are here purely for a free AI check, the no-signup graders above will get you there faster.

Cituna’s free llms.txt generator

Our own free tool is a free llms.txt generator: it builds a starter llms.txt file for your site with no signup, so AI crawlers get a clean, curated map of your most useful pages. It is a genuine utility, not a teaser, but we will be straight about the boundary. It does not, on its own, tell you how the engines cite you. That full scan is a paid product on a trial, and we cover exactly where it fits at the end of this guide rather than pretending the free tool does everything. (For what llms.txt does and does not move, read our honest llms.txt guide.)

What a free checker can’t tell you

Free tools are a real first look, and none of the limits below make them worthless, they just define the edge of what a snapshot can do:

  • They are photos, not films. Almost every free check runs once. AI answers move day to day, a competitor publishes, a model updates, and a one-time grade cannot show you that drift, only where you stood the moment you ran it.
  • They cover a handful of engines. Most free checkers query two or three engines, usually ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Claude and Grok, the engines many technical and professional buyers lean on, are rarely in a free tool at all.
  • They score, they don’t fix. A grade tells you that you are missing; it does not write the schema, FAQ markup, llms.txt or comparison content that would get you cited. The “now what?” is left to you.
  • They can’t prove impact. No free checker ties AI citations back to real clicks and impressions, so you cannot show that the work moved traffic.
  • One run can mislead. Language models vary between runs, so a single free snapshot can read better or worse than reality. Cross-checking a couple of tools is the cheap insurance.

In other words, free checkers answer “am I visible right now?” well and “how do I stay visible?” not at all. For the second question, measuring and moving AI visibility over time, see our guide to AI visibility: how to measure and improve it.

How to use free checkers well

You can get a surprising amount out of the free tools if you use them deliberately:

  1. Run two or three, not one. Pair a no-signup grader (HubSpot or Semrush) with a broader-engine preview (Ahrefs) so you are not trusting a single tool’s prompt set. Where they agree, believe it.
  2. Write down the date. A free grade is only meaningful next to another one. Note the number and the day, so when you re-check in a month you can see movement instead of guessing.
  3. Read the competitors, not just the score. The most useful line in any free report is which brands the engines named instead of you. That list is your real target set.
  4. Treat the free tool as step one. Once you know a gap exists, the work is fixing it and watching it, which is where a snapshot stops and a monitor starts.

Where Cituna fits, and our own honest numbers

We build Cituna, so here is the disclosure in full. Our free contribution to this list is the llms.txt generator above, free, no signup. The full product is not free: it scans how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Grok and Google AI Overviews cite your brand, generates the schema, FAQ markup, llms.txt and content fixes to close each gap, and ties the work back to real clicks through a native Google Search Console integration. That scan runs on a 7-day free trial that asks for a card up front, you are not charged during the trial and can cancel anytime before it converts. Plans are $39 (Starter), $99 (Pro) and $299 (Max); the full list is on our pricing page. We do not track Microsoft Copilot, and unlike Otterly, Omnia and LLMrefs, we do not offer a standing no-card free tier, a fair thing to weigh.

Our own scan data, unedited: We run the same scan on ourselves. In our own scan data for cituna.com on July 17, 2026, our AI-citation score was 9 out of 100, flagged “Critical”, with the six engines we track citing us in just 5 of 60 query-by-engine checks (ChatGPT twice; Gemini, Grok and Google AI Overviews once each; Perplexity and Claude not at all). For those same buyer questions the engines reached instead for Moz (six times), Semrush (six), Ahrefs (five), Profound (four) and Otterly.ai (three). We are the newcomer here, and we would rather show you that than a flattering number. It is also exactly the gap a free snapshot would surface, and the loop the full tool exists to close.

So the honest recommendation: start with a free checker or two from the list above, they cost nothing and will tell you whether this is a problem worth your time. If it is, the question becomes how to fix it and how to watch it, and that is where a paid monitor earns its keep. Either way, run something before you assume the engines know who you are. For the paid options side by side, ours included, see the best AI visibility tools comparison.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free AI visibility checker?

It depends on what you want from it. For a no-signup, one-time snapshot of how AI describes your brand, HubSpot’s AEO Grader and Semrush’s AI Search Visibility Checker are the fastest genuine free tools. For a free score plus public leaderboards, Am I on AI’s checker is a good look. For something you can re-run for free over time, LLMrefs’ free 1-keyword tier is the closest. There is no single best free checker, the right one depends on which engines you care about and whether you need a one-off grade or ongoing tracking.

Are free AI visibility checkers accurate?

Treat them as directional, not definitive. A free checker is a real first look, it will tell you roughly whether AI engines know your brand and who they name instead, but a single snapshot can mislead. AI answers vary run to run, most free tools query only two or three engines, and few cover Claude or Grok at all. Run more than one, re-check on a different day, and read the result as a signal to investigate rather than a final score.

Do free AI visibility checkers require signup?

It varies, and it is worth checking before you start. HubSpot’s AEO Grader runs with no account at all, and Semrush’s and Ahrefs’ free checkers let you preview without signing up. Omnia’s free 40-prompt scan emails you the report, so it asks for an address. LLMrefs offers a genuinely free 1-keyword tier with no card. The paid monitors behind these free tools usually need an account or a trial to go further.

Can I track my AI visibility for free over time?

Mostly no. Almost every free tool is a one-time snapshot rather than ongoing tracking, you get a grade today, but not a chart of how it moves as you ship changes or as the models update. LLMrefs’ free 1-keyword tier is the closest thing to free ongoing tracking, and it is deliberately narrow. Watching several engines on a schedule, catching drops while they are small, and tying them to real search traffic is the job a paid monitor does.

Is Cituna free?

We publish a free llms.txt generator you can use with no signup, and our /learn guides are free to read. The full Cituna scan, how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Grok and Google AI Overviews cite your brand, with the generated fixes and a Google Search Console tie-in, sits behind a 7-day free trial. That trial asks for a card up front, but you are not charged during it and can cancel anytime before it converts. We do not track Microsoft Copilot.
